Dear Parents and Guardians

Welcome to our school. We hope that the partnership of home and school can be instrumental in giving your child the experiences, challenges and support that they need to develop into the world of tomorrow.

Here at St Teresa of Lisieux we also have the support of the parish, you and your children are welcome to join the community particularly at Sunday Mass celebrations.

Parents/carers should be aware that the school will take any reasonable action to ensure the safety of its pupils. In cases where the school has reason to be concerned that a child may be subject to ill treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, staff will have no alternative but to follow Liverpool Child Protection Manual procedures and inform Social Services of their concern.

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA

ADMISSIONS POLICY AND ARRANGEMENTS FOR 2008/2009

 

1. St Teresa of Lisieux is a Catholic Primary School situated in the Archdiocese of Liverpool and is maintained by the Liverpool Local Authority.

2. Applications to St Teresa of Lisieux are part of the co-ordinated admission arrangements operated by the Local Authority. Application should be made both to the Local Authority, using the common preference form and to this school using the school application form, which is available from the office. These forms are available from September 2008.

3. The Governing Body of the school is responsible for determining and administering the policy relating to the admission of pupils to the school. It is guided in that responsibility by:

• the requirements of the law
• the advice of the Archdiocesan Trustees on the nature and purpose of its duties
• its duty towards the school and the Catholic community it serves
• the Catholic character of the school and its Mission Statement
• recognition of the Parish boundary

3. The school serves in the first instance baptised Catholic children in public care and those living in the Parish of St Teresa, Norris Green, Liverpool.

4. Having consulted with the Local Authority and others in accordance with the requirements of the law, the Governing Body has published its admissions limit at 60 pupils for the school year commencing September 2009.

5. Applications for a place at the school must be made on the enclosed form and returned to school no later than November 30th 2008.

6. The Governing Body has delegated responsibility for determining admissions to its Admissions Committee, which will consider all applications made in accordance with the criteria set out over the page.

7. Pupils who are admitted to the school will enter the reception classes in September 2009.

 

Notes

As required by the law the Governing Body will not admit more than 30 pupils to any one reception or infant class.

Parents may wish to know that the number of applications received last year was 76 and that 76 were admitted.

 

ADMISSIONS CRITERIA 2009

Where the number of applications exceeds the number of places available the Governing Body will apply the following over-subscription criteria:

1. Baptised Catholic looked after children.

2. Baptised Catholic children living in the Parish of St Teresa’s Norris Green Liverpool.

Proof of birth date in the form of a Birth Certificate and proof of Baptism in the form of a Baptismal Certificate is required (unless baptised in the Parish of St Teresa’s).

3. Baptised Catholic Children who have a brother or sister at the school at the time of likely admission. This includes full, half or step-brothers and sisters, and foster brothers and sisters who are living at the same address and are part of the same family unit.

4. Baptised Catholic children from other Catholic Parishes.

5. Looked after children who are other than Catholic.

6. Children who are other than Catholic who have a brother or sister at the school at the time of likely admission. This includes full, half or stepbrothers and sisters, and foster brothers and sisters who are living at the same address and are part of the same family unit.

7. If after considering applications made which meet any of the above criteria or a combination of one or more of the same, there remains a shortfall in the planned admissions number, then the Admissions Committee will consider applications made by parents of children of other Christian denominations. Proof of Baptism in the form of a Baptismal Certificate is required.

8. Children of other faiths. Evidence of affiliation to their particular faith will be required from their Minister of Religion.

9. Children whose parents express a preference for a place at the school.

In the event of any over-subscription in the number of applications made under any of the categories above then the admissions committee will offer places first to children living nearest to the school measured by the shortest walking distance using public highways.

Note

The Governing Body reserve the right to admit children with proven and exceptional medical and social needs where admission to the school might best help satisfy those exceptional needs, providing that such application is submitted with appropriate evidence or reports from a doctor or social worker.

P.E.Kit
Pale blue t-shirt & royal blue shorts. The children will also need a pair of pumps and a pump bag.

Please make sure that all items of clothing are marked with your child’s name.

Snack Money
Each day the children will have a snack at breaktime, biscuits or toast. Please send in 50p for snack money on Monday.

School Meals
Hot school meals cost £1.80 per day or £9.00 per week, please send dinner money into the office in an envelope marked with your child’s name, class and amount.

If you think you are eligible to receive free school meals you must visit Broadway One Stop Shop and ask for a clothing grant and free school meal form.

Parents must provide school with the claim reference number issued by the housing benefit service before being able to receive free school meals.

Milk is provided for children in school. After the term in which the children have their fifth birthday the cost is 12p per week, payable half termly. Families who qualify for free school meals also receive free milk.

Packed lunches may be brought to school, they should be in a small plastic box clearly marked with your child’s name. We are unable to offer refrigerated storage for lunch boxes. Government regulations state that packed lunches contain no chocolate, sweets or fizzy drinks.
Any change to the arrangements for lunch must be made after a school holiday.

School Levy
In accordance with the wishes of the Archdiocese we collect a levy of £10.00 from each Family. This money is used for the building and refurbishment of our Catholic schools. This can be paid in 3 termly instalments 1 of £4.00 and 2 of £3.00.
Pastoral care
We look forward to a close relationship with parents which will benefit your child. Parents are encouraged to come into school to discuss any matter of concern.
The headteacher is the first point of contact concerning matters of the children’s well being and educational progress.
The teaching staffs are available after school if you need to speak with them.
Pupil Welfare
 The school nurse visits school and children in the reception year have a health care interview to discuss any issues with the parents.
 Please do not bring your child to school if they are ill or on medication. If we are concerned about your child’s health during the day we will contact you so please ensure that we have at least 2 emergency numbers.
 If your child has an inhaler or is on long term medication please fill in the necessary forms from school.
 Please let us know if your child is allergic to anything. This will enable us to make appropriate provision for your child.
 In the interests of safety and in accordance with Local Education policy, jewellery should not be worn for school.

Charging Policy
Cultural trips and visitors to school are funded on a voluntary basis. If we do not receive the donations to cover the trips etc then they would be cancelled, we ask for your support in this matter.

You will be asked to give written consent to allow your child to go on school trips.

Inclusion
It is the policy of this school to treat all children with the same respect regardless of gender, academic ability, race or colour and to present all children with equal learning opportunities.
While the atmosphere and ethos of this school is essentially Christian, acceptance of the beliefs of others is encouraged.

Homework
Homework is seen as an extension of the work that is going on in the classroom and will be given by the class teacher. Parents are expected to give their full support and ensure that tasks are completed and returned to school.

Assessment and Reporting
Each child’s work and development is assessed by their class teachers.
The foundation stage profile is completed by the end of reception and at the end of Year 2 the children are assessed against the National Curriculum.
The children’s progress is reported to parents 3 times a year, twice orally and in an end of year written report.

Special Needs
The special needs co-ordinator is responsible for developing and implementing the school policy on special needs. The school has clear procedures for identifying children who have special educational needs, these can be short or long term and relate to various aspects of the child’s development. The needs are identified and addressed as early as possible , they are carefully monitored and regularly reviewed.
Parents are kept informed at all stages and if necessary external agencies will be approached on the child’s behalf. The staff member responsible for special needs is Mrs C.Kelly.

Sex Education
Children’s questions are answered honestly and simply in accordance with their age and ability.

Parents
There will be courses through the year run for parents who wish support their child’s learning. You are very welcome to join these courses. The staff member responsible for parental involvement is Mrs S. Seddon (Nursery).

Attendance
Under section 199 of the Education Act parents of children of compulsory school age are required to ensure that they receive full time education.
Parents should ensure that their children arrive at school on time, properly attired and in a condition to learn (DFES 1994). When a child is absent from school, the absence must be registered as authorised or unauthorised.
An absence can only be authorised by the Headteacher if
 The child cannot attend due to illness or any unavoidable cause.
 Leave can be granted for annual holidays up to 10 days, for those children with above 90% attendance. Permission must be sought beforehand.

Parents are asked to inform the school of the reason for the absence by

An unauthorised absence is when a child is absent without reason such as a birthday or shopping trip. It is now firmly established in law that repeated lateness can amount to failure to attend regularly for the purpose of section 199 of the Education Act – please ensure that your child arrives on time.
The parents of children whose attendance or punctuality gives cause for concern will be contacted by the Educational Welfare Officer.

Removing children from school
Parents or guardians must report to the Headteacher before removing children from school. An authorisation slip must be collected from the office if your child has an appointment, as much as possible please make the appointments after school but if this is not possible then school should be informed 24 hours beforehand.
Persons unknown to staff will not be allowed to remove a child from school without prior arrangement and identification – this is for the safety of the children.

Good attendance and good punctuality are extremely important in helping your child to progress, even a few minutes late each day can cause problems for your child.
